In Zambia, charcoal production and land clearing for farming are the primary forms of income for the local people, yet both have caused extensive deforestation and environmental damage. When the mining industry in the Copperbelt Province collapsed in the 1990s, unemployed miners turned to small scale agriculture and charcoal production to make a living, placing additional pressure on the surrounding forests. Tree planting in the Luanshya district aims to provide solutions to both environmental degradation and poverty alleviation.
