WHY IT MATTERS
HIV and AIDS is still one of the biggest scourges facing township communities in South Africa. The rate in older adults is reducing but in teenagers and young adults the infection rate is still increasing. A huge issue is young people still not knowing their 'status'. We hold HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) Football tournaments as a way of encouraging young people to test and go for counselling for HIV and AIDS. The tournaments are played as a normal tournament, however teams can get extra points if all members partake in the testing and counselling services offered on the day. This is a very effective way of encouraging young people to know their 'status' and be able to act accordingly to prevent further spread of the virus.
